St. Olaves on Oakthorpe Road. (Click and see the name above the front door on the enlarged original.) St. Olaf, to whom the Christianization of Norway is (mistakenly) attributed, was a widely popular saint in medieval Scandinavia and parts of the British Isles. His name survives among other places, in London's Tooley Street and St. Olav's Church, Hart Lane (Samuel Pepys' "Our Church"). |
