"[H]alfdan [wrote these runes]" on the balustrade of the south gallery in the Hagia Sofia Museum. Halfdan may have been a væring (varangian) of the Imperial Guard led by Harald Hardråde (1015-1066), or he may have been one of the many crusaders with King Sigurd Jorsalfar returning from the "holy land" in 1110. |
