Remnant of WWII German sand cleaning installation at Kviljo, Lista, South Norway. (4"x5" film)
Lista, at the very southern tip of Norway, was one of the main sites of the German "Atlantic Wall" in Norway. The fortifications were set up against a possible invasion by the Allies on the extensive beaches of the Lista peninsula. The concrete installations required vast amounts of concrete, so sand from the nearby beach was washed of salt with fresh water from the Kviljo stream in the foreground and distributed on a light railway laid behind the sand dunes along the length of the coast.
